Semiotic Analysis Of Kerrang Magazine

Front Cover-
The target audience is a niche audience as the magazine is targetted at heavy metal music fans. This is connoted by the name of the magazine “KERRANG!” the idea that the name is in capital letters and the use of an exclamation mark highlights a lound noise as the word kerrang is onomatopoeic. The word kerrang is shattered and grungy which gives connotations of loud noise or something being broken by something heavy which leads to the connotation of grungy heavy metal music. The name Kerrang! also conjurs up a connotation of cymbal from a drum kit which further leads to the connotation of a heavy metal magazine. The photograph further influences the connotation as the subjects of the photograph have a lot of tattoos, dark clothing and piercings and all have dark hair which we stereotypically associate with heavy metal music bands and their fans is also connoted by the photograph of a band.
The magazine is aimed at a male audience aged around 14+ the image promotes an ideal self for males as they all look tough, and the main member of the band is posing with sunglasses- we associate sunglasses with being cool. This connotation gets the audience to think he is cool so they wish to be like him.
The image is composed in a way which makes the subjects gang-like as they are huddled together and they're all looking into the face of the audience and there bodies are facing towards the left which gives the impression they are walking together in a group and glaring at the audience as they're walking past making them look tough and masculine.
